A liquid crystal is an organic compound whose properties appear to be fluid and crystalline simultaneously. Liquid crystals behave in unique ways because their several distinct optical properties exhibit interesting changes when subjected to thermal, electric, and magnetic fields.

The temperature sensing and color changing abilities of liquid crystals make them suitable for use in a wide range of thermometers and novelty applications such as the mood rings of the 70’s, clothing, and advertising specialties. Liquid crystal colors can change through the visible color spectrum with a temperature change of only two degrees C. Through formulation, the temperature range can be expanded and the starting point of the range can be changed. Conversely, Liquid Crystals can be made to hold a particular color over temperatures ranging from 10 to 60° C.

We produce these materials from cholesterol, extracted from sheep's wool, and from plant extracts. Though most of the derivatives are synthetic products of esterification reactions, we offer an extensive list of materials produced by various chemistries. For liquid crystal applications, high chemical purity and extremely low residual solvent impurities are essential. These materials are natural products, are non-toxic and may safely be applied to the skin. Cholesteric liquid crystals are used extensively in cosmetic products to provide a shining, shimmering appearance and creamy texture in lip gloss and skin moisturizers. The temperature sensitive color changing properties could be used in this application as well.
